The Society’s business is run by a Committee which meets every two months. The members constitute a wide cross-section of the wider community; they may not all have been born in Heanor, but all would regard themselves as "local" by any definition of the word.

Thanks must be given, though, for the extensive help given to the Society by people who are not themselves part of the Committee.

The current Committee members are:

Clive Booth: Clive was co-opted onto the Committee in January 2008, and was elected Secretary later that year. Clive was born in Codnor, and has spent all his life in the Heanor area, being educated at Marlpool Infants, Marlpool Boys and Aldercar Comprehensive schools. He served the Heanor community for 28 years as a police officer working from the town's police station before retiring from the force in 2007. He is interested in all aspects of local history with particular emphasis on keeping the past alive for future generations via a school-based project named 'Giving the Future a Past'.

Alan Brougham: Alan is Langley Mill born and bred - his early years were spent living on Cromford Road, and he attended Aldercar Infants School and Langley Mill Boys' School.
He spent his working life as a joiner and cabinet-maker, working for a number of local firms, including Vic Hallams, E & H Architectural (on East View Terrace), and Stag.
Now that he is retired, his main interest, other than local history, is gardening. He was elected onto the Committee of the Society in 2004

Peter Chamberlain was elected to the Committee in 2008, having been a member for several years, and helping with research for the Society's websites.
Peter lived in Langley Mill for 40 years, and went to the village schools before moving on to Heanor Grammar School. In the 1960s he moved to Waingroves.
During his working life, Peter was a miner and an engineering inspector. As well as local and family history, he is a cricket enthusiast.

David Cox: David spent 32 years as a baker in the Heanor area, and is now a kitchen assistant in a local nursing home.
He has been a member of the Society for around 19 years, and started serving on the Committee approximately six years ago. He has a particular interest in "curiosities" and Derbyshire "street furniture." As well as local history, he is keen on rambling (a member of two local rambling groups) and photography, giving occasional slide-presentations. He and his wife are members of the Heanor Methodist Church.

Trevor Elliott: Born in Heanor, Trevor was apprenticed as a joiner and worked his way up, via 15 years at Vic Hallam's, to become Managing Director of Gee Walker Slater of Derby, later of Smalley. He also spent some time as a part-time lecturer at South East Derbyshire College. Trevor is interested in all aspects of our local history, and also an avid bird-watcher. He is the Deputy Chair of the Society. Trevor still keeps his hand in with his joinery experience, and is able to knock-up an expert notice board, etc., in a flash!

Stuart Eyre: Although born in Hucknall, Stuart's family is from Langley Mill, a village to which he returned when he was 16. Starting work at Kimberley Brewery, he spent much of his working life at Hanson's Engineering at Heanor Gate, and now works part time for Derbyshire County Council.
As well as an interest in local history, he is keen on environmental issues, and is a member of the RSPB and the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Stuart is the Minutes Secretary of the Society.

Mick Hogg: Mick has lived in the Heanor area all his life, having gone to Loscoe Road Boys’ School and Aldercar Secondary School. He has spent all but a short time of his working life in the building trade, having started as an apprentice joiner at Arron Hartshorne’s on Ray Street, Heanor.
Mick has been married for 39 years, and has 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
Besides local history, he is interested in gardening, wildlife and steam railways. Mick has traced his family history back to 1604, still in the Heanor area!

Roger Hull: Chairman of the Society for the past 12 years, Roger also held the office in 1974, 1982, and 1990. He retired in 2003 after serving as headteacher of Underwood Primary School for 31 years. He has a special interest in the history of Langley Mill and frequently gives talks on the subject. He is married to Ripley born Christine and has lived for the past 38 years in Smalley. Roger is a past pupil of Heanor Grammar School and represented the Old Heanorians football club for many years - he is also a former chairman of Stainsby cricket club. Roger continues to enjoy his great loves of walking, gardening and observing wildlife.

Brian Key: Brian joined the Society just after its formation in 1968, and was voted onto the Committee within a few years. He became a member of the Publications Committee, which launched its first book (on  Street names) in 1977; he's been Chairman twice, and was Treasurer from 1987 to 2004.He is heavily involved in the work of the Heritage Centre, and in all aspects of our publications; he also gives talks on a variety of local subjects. His main historical interest is in transport, especially the canals and railways. He also enjoys walking the local area, viewing & photographing sites of interest.

Tom Larimore: Derby-born, Tom began teaching at the Howitt Secondary School in 1960; he moved to Heanor Gate County Secondary School when it opened in 1964, teaching there until 1994, and is still regularly involved with school productions. Tom has been a member of the Society for 35 years, and edits & produces the newsletter. He is active in the Derbyshire Archaeological Society, and serves on its Council. Other interests include gardening and theatre (he used to "tread the boards" with an amateur company - now enjoys being in the audience at everything from pantomimes to opera!)

Robert Mee: Born at Aldercar, and educated at Heanor Grammar School and Nottingham University, Robert is interested in anything to do with Langley Mill, and is currently researching into public houses and the local police (two subjects, not one!) He has written several articles for the Society’s newsletter, and has also compiled an index of the full 39 years of newsletters. He is the editor of this web-site, and also runs an internet discussion forum on our local history. Robert has written a book on the history of Heanor Grammar School, published by the Society in 2008.
He was elected Treasurer of the Society in 2004.

Paul Tomblin: Originally from Nottingham, Paul lived at Holbrook and Borrowash before moving to Heanor in the 1970's. Paul represented the County at cross country running. A teacher of Special Needs pupils at Borrowash School for 15 years, he left to set up his own business. As well as his interest in local history, Paul is an railway enthusiast, and is also keen on bird-watching and on researching his family history. Paul was elected onto the Committee in April 2006.

Winifred Waterall: Winifred has been a member of the Society since 1976. She was the Secretary from 1996 to 2008. Educated at Alfreton High School and the Margaret McMillan Teacher Training College, Bradford, Winifred taught at Loscoe Denby Lane Primary School, and later as a supply teacher in several local schools. In addition to her interest in local history, Winifred is a family historian, and founder member of two Derbyshire Family History Groups. She has transcribed several Derbyshire Parish Registers, including Heanor St. Lawrence back to 1558. She has also helped to record memorial inscriptions in many Derbyshire churchyards.

John Wright: John is the only member of the Committee who is also a founder member of the Society, having joined in 1968. He served in the army, 3 years in the Canal Zone, and was finally awarded his medal for this campaign in 2003. A plumber by trade, he worked for Heanor Urban District Council, and then Derbyshire County Council.
He is particularly interested in the history of transport, and especially public road transport. John is a member of the Society's publications sub-committee.

Peter Wright: Peter was born on Mundy Street, Heanor, and has lived all his life in the same house in Langley, a village of which he has an exceptional knowledge.
Peter has been in the farming industry for many years, having worked for the Langley Mill and Aldercar Co-op, which bought Laceyfields Farm, where he worked, from the Shipley Estate in the 1920's.
As well as his general interest in local history, Peter is also a member of St. John's Ambulance.

The committee is involved in all aspects of planning in relation to the Society, from choosing what speakers to have in the forthcoming programmers, to preparing future publications, and running the various projects we are involved in. If you would like to know any more about the Committee’s work, please ask any of the members directly, or use the Contact Us page - if your message is for a specific Committee Member, it will reach them.
