The Changing Face of Shipley

In 1983, the Heanor and District Local History Society published a small volume entitled “Heanor Then and Now”. It was popular and sold out fairly quickly, and has never been reprinted. But if you were to look at it now, you would in many cases not be able to see any “now” – after 40 years, they are all “then” pictures. And it is that fact which has given rise to this our latest publication. Using the same principal as before, we have taken a collection of old photographs and, wherever possible, stood in the same location as the original photographer to take a modern picture. All of the modern photographs date from 2024/25. There is little doubt that in another 40 years many of these pictures will no longer be valid – they present, quite literally, a snap-shot of parts of Shipley at a given time. But all will change again!
After a nine-year’s gap since the second book in the series, we now present the latest edition – we hope to continue the series in the future, covering other parts of the Heanor area. As with The Changing Face of Heanor Town Centre and The Changing Face of Langley Mill and Aldercar, this edition is an A4 book in full colour. The accompanying text has been written by Alyson Marriott and Gordon Shaw, both members of the Society’s committee.
