This evening the Local History Society had a trip to Wingfield Station. The station, situated between South Wingfield and Oakerthorpe, is the oldest unaltered rural railway station in the world, and has been lovingly restored over the last few years.
Around 30 members and friends attended, and we were split into two groups to be given a guided tour of the small but fascinating building, being given details of its role in railway history (it dates from 1840), its impact on the local population, and its restoration.
For once we had great weather, and at the end of the tour there was a lovely cafe.
The station is maintained totally by volunteers, and is well worth a visit.
